An efficient yacht is not only economical to run, but also easy to build, maintain and operate. Every yard knows that balance between comfort, performance and practicality. That’s why we focus on the start, the first sketch as part of the complete design.
At HOFF, we see efficiency as something that runs through every discipline. It’s not only about fuel use or emissions, but also about build logic, system layout and ease of maintenance. In short: no wasted energy, time or space.
Starting Below the Waterline
The shape of the hull decides how much power is needed to move forward. And with that, it influences everything that follows: engine size, battery capacity, fuel systems, even noise and vibration.
Small differences in form can make a big impact. Sometimes just a few percent less resistance leads directly to smoother sailing and lower power demand.

That drive to improve is also reflected in research.
Recently, Scott van Hagen at HOFF studied how hull shapes behave at low speeds. By analyzing dozens of variants, he found clear patterns: with subtle adjustments in volume and transom geometry, up to seven percent less resistance can be achieved without any loss of comfort or stability. Read more about it here.
Focus on Buildability
Efficient design is also about how well something can be built. A clean line on paper still has to make sense in the workshop. Piping routes, access hatches, fixings, service space, all those practical details decide how smooth construction and later maintenance will be. There’s as much to gain there as in a single percentage point of drag reduction.
Weight plays its part too. It hides everywhere: in structure, insulation, systems, cabling, and interior.
If it isn’t managed early, it quietly grows until it affects performance. HOFF keeps that balance under control from the start. It’s about conscious choices: where weight adds value, and where it doesn’t.
And What About Electrification?
We see, fully electric propulsion isn’t yet the standard, but the shift has clearly begun. Designs that already optimize for low resistance, controlled weight and practical buildability are naturally ready for that next step.
The Biggest Gains Come at the Beginning
A good project starts with understanding what’s really needed. At HOFF, we take that time. We look at how the vessel will be used, what matters most to the yard, and where the technical limits lie. Once that’s clear, we can offer solutions that actually move the project forward.
When everyone shares the same picture of the final result, each discipline knows its role. Less rework, smoother progress. It sounds simple, yet there’s still much to gain there. Everything on a yacht connects: energy, water, climate, comfort. It’s a small, self-sustaining village. You can’t build it in fragments; you do it together, with a clear overview.
During the process we stay flexible. Things change, that’s part of it. But we always keep sight of the bigger picture, making sure every choice fits the whole. That’s how a design becomes truly efficient, both in concept and in execution.
HOFF is the engineering partner for shipyards and suppliers. Strong in Basic Engineering, supported by a broad network of specialists. That’s how we help a project move forward. Efficiently, for the yard, the supplier and the end user alike.
